All-Time Best - Women’s Team 5K
During the second year, 2005, of UTPB’S Cross Country season, the UTPB CC team competed primarily at the NCAA DI and DII level meets. The level of competition, prestige, and commitment heightened the overall program to regional and national contenders. Gray commented, “On an overall percentage our women improved their overall performance by 1-2 minutes during this season in the 5K effort. Our women had 1-2 teams periodically ranked throughout the season in the top 25 in the country from within our conference. As our women improved, so did everyone else around us”. Michel Joiner, sophomore, held steady and consistent, taking Most Valuable Runner on the women’s side. Norma Navarro, newcomer, surged late in the season to come close to Joiner, improving by over 6 minutes this season. The higher level of competition in 2005 will better serve to improve the level of intensity going to the NCAA II level Fall of 2006.
In the inaugural season, The University of Texas of the Permian Basin’s Cross Country team literally hit the ground running. Under first year head coach Pam Gray, the Falcons went from first week workouts where the team had trouble completing runs under the hot West Texas sun, to competing in the Regional Meet and coming only seconds away from sending two runners to the national meet. UTPB also had its first All-Conference and All-Regional runner on the men’s side, thanks to the hard work of Freshman Philip Ormsby.
In the programs first season the UTPB Women finished 3rd in the Red River Athletic Conference Meet and 7th at the NAIA Region VI Meet as a team. Individually, Michel Joiner and Marielle Gatson finished in the top ten in the Conference meet and Joiner finished 16th in the Regional Meet.
