The men’s basketball program was established in the Fall of 2002. When started, the basketball program was in the NAIA and competed in the Red River Athletic Conference. The program remained in the Red River until the 2006-2007 season when the school entered the NCAA II ranks and joined the Heartland Conference.

Initially, the program was under the leadership of Coach Keith Thompson for the first two seasons. Coach Thompson led the program to three victories during his first two seasons as helped to build a roster and the program.

Following Thompson’s tenure, Coach Billy Mims led the program during the 2004-2005 campaign. In his lone year, Coach Mims directed the program to nine wins following a win-less season.

Our current head coach, Randy Lee, took over in the Summer of 2005 and is entering his third year as coach, the longest tenure of any basketball coach. In his inaugural season, UTPB won 20 games and advanced to the Red River Conference playoffs for the first time. Coach Lee’s second year was a transition year as the program moved to NCAA DII and was competitive within the conference finishing 7-9 against conference opponents.

The philosophy of the program is to play as many of the top-ranked NCAA DII and NCAA DI teams that are possible with scheduling. Past NCAA DI opponents include: Texas A&M, University of North Texas, UT- Arlington, UTEP, Texas State, Rice University, UT-Pan American. During the 2005-2006 season, the Falcons beat Texas State on their home-court. Travel has taken the team to: New Mexico, Colorado, Montana, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, and Georgia. During the 2007-08 season, UTPB will play add Alaska and Louisiana to the states where their games have taken them.
