Summary of Course: Administration and management are central to the human performance professional. The decision that we make concerning a program or company have a greater impact than we expect. The purpose of this course is help the student develop a sound foundation in basic management concepts. The goal of this course is to provide the student with the appropriate tools to make accurate and valid decisions. To accomplish this goal, the student will learn how to develop organizational structures, policies and procedures, communication skills, and program promotion. Upon completion of the course, the student will possess (1) a basic understanding of the concepts in ethics, marketing and promotion, leadership, and staffing, (2) an appreciation of the historical and contemporary concepts in management,, and (3) the capability to relate their studies of the fundamental concepts to real world endeavors. Students are expected to attend every class unless excused due to illness or extreme circumstances.

Grading Scheme: Each student begins with 20,000 points (equivalent to the grade of an A) Points are deducted from this total by answering test/quiz questions incorrectly, missing deadlines for the submission of class projects, and incomplete group research. The grading sequence is as follows:

20,000 - 17,800 = A

17,799 - 15,800 = B

15,799 - 13,800 = C

13,799 - 11,800 = D

11,799 or below = F

Course Layout:

Student Resume` -- Each student will develop a resume`/vitae for their ideal job upon graduation. Due January 15, 1999 (point total= 500)

News Articles -- 6 news articles will be turned in during the semester.  The news articles will be appropriate for each section of the text. (500 pts. each)

Tests -- Tests will be given on the material covered for the following weeks:

Test 1-- Monday February 22, 1999-- Material covered for January 13 -- February 14. (point total = 2,000 pts.)

Test 2-- Monday April 5, 1999-- Material covered for February 17 -- March 26. (point total = 3,000 pts.)

Test 3-- Monday May 3, 1999 (12:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.) -- Material covered for April 7 -- April 30. (point total = 3,500 pts.)

Class Projects -- Four management projects will be completed by each student, and a typed report will be due 10 days from the start date. ( 2,000 pts. for each report).  Project Start Dates::

January 29: Organizational Profiles of 3 companies

February 17 - 19:  Long Range Planning and Contingencies.

March 17: Policy Development.

April 12: Case Studies 1-5 and 11- 15 in workbook.
