Time: 7:05 p.m. - 8:20 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays Instructor: James Eldridge Office: MB 3144 Phone# 552-2331 Email: eldridge_j@utpb.edu TEXT : ACSM'S GUIDELINES FOR EXERCISE TESTING & PRESCRIPTION -- Required Summary of Course: The purpose of this course is to acquaint the student with the essential aspects of exercise in special populations. The goals of this course are to provide the student with the (a) basic aspects of exercise principles for pregnancy, children, elderly, and the disabled, (b) an appreciation of the historical and contemporary concepts of exercise for these special groups, and (c) the capability to relate their studies of the fundamental concepts to real world endeavors. Students are expected to attend every class unless excused due to illness or extreme circumstances. The professor reserves the prerogative to drop a student from the course if they accumulate more than 3 unexcused absences. Grading Scheme: Each student begins with 1,000 points (equivalent to the grade of an A) Points are deducted from this total by answering test/quiz questions incorrectly, missing deadlines for the submission of class projects, and incomplete research papers. The grading sequence is as follows: 1,000 - 900 = A; 899 - 800 = B; 799 - 700 = C; 699 - 600 = D; 599 or below = F Course Layout: Student Resume` -- Each student will develop a resume` for their ideal job upon graduation. Due January 21, 2008 (point total = 25 pts) TACSM Conference– Students will attend the TACSM conference on February 29—March 1, 2008 at the MCM Elegante Hotel in Odessa, TX. Registration will be $15.00. (point total = 100 pts) Tests -- Tests will be given on the material covered for the following weeks: Test 1 -- Wednesday February 20, 2008 -- (point total = 125 pts.) Test 2 -- Wednesday March 26, 2008 -- (point total = 200 pts.) Test 3 -- Monday April 28, 2008 (TAKE HOME) -- (point total = 300 pts.) DUE BY MONDAY MAY 5, 2008 - 11:59 PM Literature Reviews -- Each student will write a minimum of a 10 page paper with 20 references describing the effects and side effects of exercise within a selected special population. (point total = 250 pts each.) DUE BY APRIL 28, 2008 |
