2003-2004 RESULTS

The Men’s and Women’s Swimming programs are part of a continuing effort to expand the athletic offerings at UTPB which began in 1994. UTPB currently competes in a combined total of 11 men and women’s sports.

When it was discussed in 1998 to renovate and re-open the Olympic size outdoor pool at UTPB after a 10 year closure, the one million dollar plus project was to include updates that would make it possible to train a men’s and women’s swim team and host collegiate swimming meets. The renovations were completed in the spring of 2001 and the pool opened to the university and the public in the summer of 2001.

In the fall of 2002, the decision was made within the athletic department to add men and women’s swimming to begin in the fall of 2003. Rob Rankin, who was hired in December of 2000 as Director of Student Recreation and Aquatics, served as a consultant for the completion of the pool renovations and then staffed and supervised activities at the newly opened aquatic facility. Rob had many years of previous experience coaching and working in an aquatic environment and was looking forward to the time in which collegiate swimming would be added to the athletic program at UTPB.

Throughout the swim season of 2002-2003, Rob worked to bring the first swimming recruits to UTPB. The inaugural swim season of 2003-2004 began with nine women and eleven men. Throughout the first season, the swimmers competed well and surprised not only the coach, but themselves as well. The men’s team placed third at three different invitational meets and sent nine swimmers to the NAIA National Meet in March of 2004 where they finished tenth. The women’s team dwindled to five swimmers, but qualified three relays and one individual for the NAIA National Meet.

The future looks bright for the UTPB swimming teams. The 2004-2005 season began with both the men and women’s teams at full capacity. Money appropriated in the fall of 2004 by the UT System will be used to hire architects to study the feasibility of covering the outdoor Olympic size pool making it available for training throughout the swimming season. Although this project may still be a few years away, the future of UTPB swimming will eventually be housed in one of the best small school, year round training facilities in the country.
